Five years after his unfortunate death, photographer Rodney Smith is once again celebrated. The masterful fashion photographer, known for his original and surreal imagery, sees 10 of his prints added to the permanent collection of the J. Paul Getty Museum. To celebrate this monumental occasion, the Rodney Smith Estate is hosting a series of curatorial conferences over the coming months.
The first, which takes place on December 8 at 6 p.m. EST, is called What makes fashion photography an art and brings together a panel of renowned experts. These include Paul Martineau, curator of photographs at the J. Paul Getty Museum; Etheleen Staley, Founder, Staley Wise Gallery; Viktória Vámosi, international model; and Dennis Freedman, founding creative director of Magazine W. The event will take place online and is free to the public after registration.
It’s a wonderful opportunity to learn more about photography as an art form and gain a deeper understanding of Smith’s work. Legendary photographer Smith, who has worked for fashion giants like Neiman Marcus, Bergdorf Goodman and Ralph Lauren, is experiencing a resurgence. Apart from his photographs acquired by the Getty, several of his images are at the center of Hermès’ current holiday campaign.
For the Rodney Smith Estate, which is run by his widow Lesley Smolan, it has been gratifying to watch the appreciation for his work grow over time. As Smolan said Daily women’s clothing, “The challenge has always been that a lot of people don’t recognize photos by name.” But now that is starting to change.
Stay tuned to Smith’s official site for announcements on further talks with the Conservatives in the coming months, and be sure to register online if you want to participate in the December 8 discussion.
